During the final stop of the 20th anniversary tour of the Young Lovers' Edition of The Peony Pavilion, Bai Xianyong, general producer of this show and one of today's most renowned writers and cultural figures in Chinese language, accepted our invitation for an interview.
He discussed topics such as the overseas promotion of this Kunqu classic and the inheritance of Kunqu in universities and colleges, and he expressed his hopes for the media's role in the transmission and dissemination of traditional culture. Let's listen to his lifelong story of pursuing the renaissance of Kunqu opera.
Bai Xianyong shared with us a story that occurred during the 2005 tour of the Young Lovers' Edition of The Peony Pavilion at Nanjing University. There was a girl who remarked that he was like Don Quixote, crossing into another realm to promote the inheritance of Kunqu opera. "I am like Don Quixote," Bai Xianyong said, "I have that kind of idealism."
