On November 21, Markku Tapio Kulmala, Director of the Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR), Academician of the Academy of Finland, and Foreign Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences, led a delegation of University of Helsinki to Nanjing University.
Tan Zhemin, President of NJU and Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) met with the delegation. Fu Congbin, Academician of CAS and Foreign Academician of Finnish Academy of Science and Letters, and Ding Aijun, Assistant President of Nanjing University attended the meeting.
On behalf of NJU, Tan expressed warmest welcome to Kulmala and his delegation. He pointed out that over the past ten years, NJU and the University of Helsinki have achieved a series of cooperation results, especially the Nanjing-Helsinki Institute in Atmospheric and Earth System Sciences, Nanjing University (NJU Nanjing-Helsinki Institute). It was jointly established by the two parties, and has become a model of higher education co-operation between China and Finland. He introduced the recent development of Suzhou Campus and the University's strategies and initiatives for the development of engineering disciplines. He welcomed faculties and students of the two universities to actively participate in NJU's international cooperation initiatives, and jointly promote the development of cooperation between the two sides.
Kulmala expressed gratitude for the hospitality of NJU. He said that next year marks the 75th anniversary of China-Finland diplomatic relations, and hoped that the two universities would take this opportunity to jointly promote cross-cultural exchanges and scientific research cooperation between the two countries, and to make greater contributions to the friendship between the peoples of China and Finland.
Kulmala delivered a lecture on "Impact of atmospheric new particle formation on air quality and global climate"
Kulmala's delegation visited SORPES, School of Atmospheric Sciences, Nanjing-Helsinki Institute, and School of Intelligence Science and Technology, and had in-depth exchanges with representatives of relevant institutions. Kulmala also planted a ginkgo tree, a symbol of friendship between the two universities, in the Academician Forest on Suzhou Campus.
Ding Aijun, Assistant President of NJU accompanied Kulmala's delegation to meet with officials from Suzhou High-Tech Industrial Development Zone, and discussed the future development of NJU Nanjing-Helsinki Institute.
