On the afternoon of January 12, the summary meeting of the Great Discussion was held at Xianlin Campus. Tan Tieniu, Academician of the CAS and Secretary of CPC NJU Committee attended the meeting and delivered a speech. Lyu Jian, Academician of the CAS and President of NJU chaired the meeting.
Tan pointed out that the main purpose of the summary meeting was to review and summarize the results of the Discussion, comprehensively understand its significance, and thus make the best of the Discussion. The University will specify the requirements of the next phase of work in order to effectively liberating the mind and strive to build a world-class university with Chinese characteristics, unique traits of NJU and the times.
Tan said that the Discussion was particularly important in the following six major aspects: firstly, the discussion has mobilized all the NJUers to pool their efforts to the construction of a better NJU; secondly, the Discussion has lifted the entrepreneurial spirit of the staff; thirdly, it is a critical analysis on the problems in the development of NJU; fourthly, it has provoked our thought about the future of NJU; fifthly, many constructive suggestions have been offered at a time when the construction of the “Unique NJU” is facing various challenges; sixthly, the Discussion has strongly promoted the improvement in the Party building, academic advancement and the administration of the University. The Discussion has joined together the wisdom of NJUers and fully demonstrated the power of NJU in the new era.
Tan pointed out that desirable results has been achieved and the expectations fully met. First, the Discussion has deepened our understanding of the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and the important reply from General-secretary Xi Jinping, and developed firm conviction in making outstanding contributions in serving the country with science and education. Second, it has helped clearly identify the position of NJU. Third, it has marked out the development stage of NJU and raised the awareness of urgency. Fourth, it has deepened our understanding of the main challenges facing NJU, further clarifying the focus of the next step. Fifth, it has enhanced the sense of belonging among NJUers.
Tan stressed that the University will fully implement what we have got from “the Great Discussion” with a sense of responsibility and urgency to accelerate the construction of NJU. First, the University should adhere to the spirit of the 20th CPC National Congress and General-secretary Xi’s important reply and try hard to put what we have learned from the Great Discussion into practice. Second, the University should carry on the spirit of the Discussion, constantly strengthening the sense of belonging and the construction of primary Party organizations. Third, the University must speed up drawing up a plan of action to implement the tasks specified by the Discussion. Fourth, the University is going to sort out the problems marked during the Discussion and solve them in time. Fifth, the University must sum up lessons of the past and improve the system and the long-term mechanism. Fifth, the University should summarize the experiences of the Great Discussion and establish a sound institutional system and long-term mechanism for it.
Yang Zhong, Executive Deputy Secretary of CPC NJU committee summarized “the Great Discussion”. He said that the Discussion was based on the new requirements of the coordinated development of “education, science and technology and talents”, insisting on liberating the mind and promoting the freedom of expression in order to pool the wisdom of all and solve problems. Careful plan was made in the preparation, extensive discussion and the final review of ideas. The Discussion has achieved fruitful results due to three reasons. First, the organization of the activity was well designed and planned. With the effective leadership and clear guide, the Discussion was targeted at solving problems thoroughly. Second, a wide range of methods were adopted to solicit opinions from various platforms efficiently. Third, the Discussion has effectively identified the existing problems and offered solutions with careful studies and shared understanding. Through the Discussion, a good atmosphere has been created where all of the NJU’s faculty, staff and students are encouraged to speak the truth, voice their honest opinions and provide constructive advice. As a result, we have achieved the goal of gaining consensus, understanding the situation, and motivating people to forge ahead and keep the righteousness and innovation.
Ma Yuqiang, Academician of the CAS and professor of the School of Physics, shared his own experience of participating in the Discussion. He believed it has provided an effective channel for teachers and students to make suggestions and created a strong atmosphere for everyone to speak the truth and contribute good ideas. He hoped that a regular mechanism will be set up for all-round communication among the faculty, staff and students, and all units be promoted so that the results of “the Great Discussion” can be applied to building NJU into a world-class university.
Many other teachers and staff members also exchanged their ideas on the Discussion, the results achieved, and the experience they gained. They all agreed that in such a critical period of the construction of the “Unique NJU”, the university-wide discussion activities are just significant and in time. The faculty, staff and students have provided in the love of NJU objective evaluation, thinking and suggestions of high quality to the administration of the University in all aspects. In the future, they will continue to work together in a pragmatic and innovative way in order to build the “Unique NJU”.
