On November 30, a symposium for young NJU scholars who have returned from overseas studies was held at Xianlin Campus to talk about the construction of the “Unique NJU”. Tan Tieniu, Secretary of CPC NJU Committee, and Lyu Jian, President of NJU, were present and discussed with the young scholars. Xue Hailin, Vice Secretary of CPC NJU Committee, chaired the symposium.
Tan commended the young scholars on their contributions and achievements and believed they are to determine the future of NJU. He offered them five pieces of advice: first, to accurately grasp the opportunities in this new era and align with the country’s development; second, to work hard, living up to the nation’s earnest expectations; third, to strive to pioneering the internationalization and the construction of NJU into a world-class university with their international perspective and mentality; fourth, to take an active part in the University-Wide Discussion so as to better focus upon such issues as interdisciplinary research, organized scientific research, etc., and share their opinions for the development of NJU; and fifth, to strive to become a model in education.
Lyu Jian pointed out that as an important asset to China’s education, talents, and science and technology, NJU should try hard to fully implementing the fundamental tasks of moral education, and cultivation of outstanding talents for the country and the people. The young scholars should seize the opportunities in the ongoing reform in science and technology, promote the transformation and upgrading of scientific research, and focus their energy to solve bottleneck problems. The President further elaborated on the differences between interdisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research and discussed the issue of topic selection in organized scientific research as well as its implementation methods. He also pointed out that young scholars should create an innovative chain of scientific research that begins with basic research and technological creation and ends at the materialization of the research result. They should strive to satisfy the nation’s strategic needs with core technologies and independent intellectual properties.
The 19 representatives from varied majors and fields had an in-depth discussion concerning the construction of NJU as a world-class university based upon their experience in overseas studies and their work at NJU. They take it as their duty to utilize their strengths to meet the needs of the country, and work in unison to promote organized scientific research, internationalization of NJU, the building of talent teams, and interdisciplinary and evaluation reforms, contributing to the construction of the “Unique NJU” with all the superior teaching and research facilities provided to them.
Zhou Jilin, Member of the CPC NJU Committee, Minister of the Department of Graduate Student Affairs, and Executive Vice President of the Graduate School of NJU, also attended the meeting. Also present were heads of the Faculty Affairs Office, Human Resources Department, Undergraduate School, Office of Humanities and Social Sciences, Science and Technology Department, and other relevant departments.
