Awarding ceremony of Huawei “Spark Awards” held at NJU

On the afternoon of April 7, the awarding ceremony for the “Huawei Spark Awards” was held at NJU. 10 scholars from relevant departments of the University were honored. Attendees included Zha Jun, Director of Huawei and Head of the 2012 Laboratory, Xu Shengjun, Director of Huawei Nanjing Research Institute, Tan Zhemin, Academician of the CAS and President of NJU, and Lu Yanqing, Vice President of NJU. Tan and Zha presented the awards to the winners. Lu presented the Organizational Contribution Award to the NJU Science and Technology Office.



Tan congratulated the winners and thanked Huawei for its long-term support. He mentioned that high-tech enterprises and high-level universities in China shoulder the responsibility of leading the  innovation and development of science and technology, and that they should work together to lay out basic and key technology research, promote collaborative research between universities and enterprises, and help China achieve self-reliance and self-improvement in science and technology. He pointed out that NJU is committed to building a research model based on basic research and extending to science and technology creation and result transformation. The University actively explores new modes of university-enterprise cooperation, and focuses on future development and industrial demand with Huawei to promote the integration of industry, academia, and research. In the future, NJU will work with Huawei to enable long-term mutually-beneficial strategic cooperation.



Zha pointed out that Huawei is committed to breakthroughs in basic theory and technological innovation. Through “Huawei Spark Awards,” which rewards the solution of scientific and technological problems encountered by industries, the Company encourages university teachers and students to actively participate in the formation of an advanced model of complementary cooperation between industry, academia, and research, with enterprises in the roles of problem creators and judges and universities problem solvers. Universities have a solid foundation in theoretical research and a continuous supply of high-quality talent, while Huawei has real and fresh front-line operational experience and rich and detailed business data. The two can be deeply complementary to each other. He hopes to continue the “Huawei Spark Awards” model in NJU and other universities to solve real problems and make real solutions.



Since 2021, Huawei has been actively seeking from outside solutions to problems of both commercial and scientific nature. It encourages university teachers to actively participate in the initiative. To recognize and thank those who have made significant contributions to the industry and the scientific community, Huawei has set up the Spark Awards.



Winners from NJU, heads from relevant departments and colleges, and directors and chief experts of Huawei attended the ceremony.
